Video and Computer Game Report Card

The Report acknowledges the strides taken by industry

The National Institute on Media and the Family (NIMF) released its 11th Annual MediaWise Video and Computer Game Report Card on November 29, 2006. Each year the Institute conducts a survey of parents, retailers and the video game industry and issues ratings based on their efforts to limit or restrict children's exposure to violent and sexually explicit games. Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT) joined Institute officials for the event.

According to this year's report, large retailers and video game creators have made significant improvements in restricting kids' access to Mature and Adults-Only games, while smaller stores and parents lag behind. The Report acknowledges the strides taken by industry and states that, "while we will continue to pressure the industry to improve, this report card focuses less on the flaws of a complex industry and more on what all of us can do about the real risks posed by some types of video games." A full copy of this year's Report Card is attached.

You will recall that the arcade industry's 2001 grade was a "D" but was improved to a "B-" in 2005. Importantly, this year the Institute did not evaluate or provide a rating for the arcade industry and focused exclusively on retailers, parents, and console manufacturers.

While the focus of this year's report was away from the coin-op industry, AAMA and AMOA should continue ongoing efforts to encourage rigorous and consistent enforcement of our System and Code of Conduct.
