Amusement & Music Operators Association (AMOA)

2005 AMOA INTERNATIONAL EXPO - WRAP-UP

Orland Park, IL -The 2005 AMOA International Expo, September 14-16, 2005 in Las Vegas was a huge success.

There was a very positive energy in the North Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center during the three days of the show. With over 500 booths and 160 exhibitors, the attendees were able to walk the floor and view many new and exciting products.

At this year's show, there was a combined total attendance of 6,400 which included both AMOA and Fun Expo.

Sponsorships of the Golf Outing and Cocktail Party along with the exhibitor advertising indicated strong support of the exhibitors.

Over 21 companies with 33 entries were involved in the Innovator Award Programs. Winners of this year's event were Benchmark Games, Incredible Technologies, Merit Industries and UltraCade Technologies.

The Third Annual Golf Classic was held on Tuesday, September 13th at the Las Vegas Golf Club. Over 100 golfers participated in this fun-filled day. Firestone Financial Corp. sponsored the Hole-In-One Contest with a chance to win a new Infiniti and 52 firms served as hole sponsors with the monies going to the AMOA PAC Program. The following companies took part in other sponsorships: Valley-Dynamo - Beverage Cart; Bay-Tek, Louisiana Amusement & Music Operators Association, Montana Coin Machine Association and Tennessee Coin Machine Operators Association - Luncheon; Incredible Technologies - Putting Contest; and Brady Distributing, Firestone Financial Corp., MEI and the Las Vegas Convention Center - Goody Bags,

Over 40 exhibitors took advantage of the AMOA Show Specials and buyers were able to take advantage of the many discounts provided in the coupon books that were distributed at the show. Balloons and floor stickers helped direct buyers to the participating booths.

More excitement was generated with the drawing of five jukeboxes sponsored by the Jukebox Promotion Committee. AMOA jukebox operators who license their jukeboxes with the Jukebox License Office could enter to win one of five jukeboxes throughout the show. Attendance at each drawing was required.

Exhibitors such as TouchTunes Music Corp., Valley-Dynamo and Medalist Marketing Corporation also conducted drawings on the show floor, which added a lot of excitement.

The All-Industry Gala held on Wednesday, September 14th was a smashing success. This year's event attracted over 1500 industry professionals and a live performance by SheDaisy was enjoyed by all. Sponsors of this event were AMOA, IALEI, AAMA, Betson Enterprises, Firestone Financial Corp., Incredible Technologies, Merit Industries, SEGA Amusements USA, Inc., Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, Sterling & Sterling and Valley-Dynamo.

Five seminars which, were coordinated by the Expo Education Committee, were held on Wednesday and Thursday during the show and were enjoyed by a large number of attendees and exhibitors. The topics for these seminars were:

  • WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BUYING OR SELLING A ROUTE
  • 50 REPAIR TIPS - SHORTCUTS TO SERVICING COIN-OP EQUIPMENT
  • WINNING WITH SELF-CONTAINED REDEMPTION AMUSEMENTS
  • FROM DISCIPLINE TO DISMISSAL: DELICATELY DEALING WITH DIFFICULT EMPLOYEE ISSUES
  • THE SUN NEVER SETS ON SELLING: FINDING WAYS TO EXPAND THE

ENTERPRISE

The sixth session: The subject of Native American Gaming and Its Impact on the Coin Machine Industry was cancelled due the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The Wayne E. Hesch Scholarship raised over $75,000 - the largest amount to date - for the coin-op education program with over 60 companies providing products to raffle. A 2005 Electra Glide Standard Harley Davidson along with a wide screen TV were a few of the items that were available to win.

And lastly, AMOA created its “Coin-Op Cares” program in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and the total raised to date, including matching funds from AMOA and Incredible Technologies, has reach six figures, topping $100,000. The money will go to three organizations: The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and one or two locally-based charitable groups to be determined at a later date.

“The action on the show floor certainly contradicts the “doom and gloom” reports on the marketplace,” said AMOA Executive VP Jack Kelleher. “There is no disputing the industry is soft right now, but this year's Expo - by virtue of the traffic in the aisles, the new equipment displayed in the booth, the number of show specials and the upbeat tone among participants - showed there are many opportunities in all tiers of the coin-op channel.”

“Each year, AMOA directors walk the show floor with informal exhibitor surveys in hand,” said Association President Marion Paul. “During my polling of manufacturing executives, the feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive. I think it reflects a lot of hard work by a lot of people, who are trying their best to make the business the best it can be, through Expo. And, I would say there were successful.

The 2006 AMOA International Expo will again be held in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the South Hall, S1, Wednesday, September 27 through Friday, September 29, 2006.
