King will oversee licensing, publishing and research. SAN FRANCISCO — Ecast, an entertainment company operating the largest broadband touchscreen media network in the United States, has hired music licensing veteran Charles King as its music division’s publishing director. Reporting to Lisa Tiver, senior vice president, business affairs, King will oversee licensing, publishing and research. In this position, he will be responsible for prioritizing newly-released music, promoting emerging artists and expanding Ecast’s library. As publishing director, he will reinforce Ecast’s dedication to delivering licensed music, while fulfilling the requests of the network’s operators and users. “Our music team is dedicated to the protection of copyrighted and intellectual property. With that, we strive to provide our network with licensed music. Charles will uphold our philosophy with his strong understanding of the industry," said Ms. Tiver. “He will be instrumental in negotiating and securing new licensing and publishing contracts, which will help us continually grow our music catalog.” The Ecast music group works closely with the major record labels, independent labels, music publishers and artists to negotiate and secure licensing contracts. Ecast actively negotiates catalog licenses with major and independent music labels and publishers, and is constantly acquiring new rights to expand its library. Ecast licenses every album in its entire music catalog. Label partners include all Big Four record companies (Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Group, and Warner Music Group) and many independents including Sanctuary Group, Curb, Freddie, Razor and Tie and Saddle Creek. In addition to working with independent aggregators such as Ioda, Ecast also has hundreds of direct licenses with publishers and administrators – big and small. Additionally, Ecast has licenses with all three performing rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI and SESAC) for public performance in the United States. King has over 14 years of music licensing, copyright and intellectual property experience with digital media. Prior to Ecast, King served as a rights clearance specialist for Northern California Public Broadcasting. In this position, he was responsible for the management and clearance of intellectual property rights for KQED Public Television and Radio, KTEH Public Television, KCAH Public Television, its Education network and interactive division. Before that, King was director of music rights and licensing at TouchTunes Music Corporation where he was in charge of the development and management of music rights and licensing. King holds a bachelor’s from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.
