GLOBAL VR® CROWNS NEW WORLD CHAMPION OF VIDEO GOLF

Newcomer Shawn Powers walks away with $15,000 in cash and a guaranteed spot in next year’s Golf Championship event

SAN JOSE, Calif – GLOBAL VR, publisher and manufacturer of one of the world’s most popular arcade games, EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR® Golf – Challenge Edition, hosted its second annual video golf championship in Las Vegas, Nevada at Bally’s Hotel and Casino on May 18th - 21st. True to form, the event was a resounding success and entertained more than 74 people from 6 countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, Canada, South Africa and the United States.

The festivities began on Friday evening when GLOBAL VR welcomed qualifying players and their guests by hosting a cocktail party and by inviting the ladies to participate in the now traditional “Ladies Shoot Out”. Qualification began in earnest on Saturday morning on the Sawgrass course. The best score ended with a -24 with 90,303 Great Shot Points shot by Stephen Dakin. The second qualification course was Turnberry Golf Club and was owned by Tim Shannon who shot an impressive -24 with 97,079 Great Shot Points. The final Qualification was the challenging Great White North and was won by Charles Erdmann who ended the round with an impressive -23 and 87,955 Great Shot Points. Charles Erdmann was especially pleased with these results since he entered the event as an alternate and ended up finishing 12th overall. Each Qualification course winner was awarded $500 and went on to compete in the elimination rounds. The cut to 32 players was -57 with 202,022 GSP. The player who ranked 33rd missed the cut by less and 3000 GSP. Players from South Africa, Canada and the United States made up the final roster of participants.

Head-to-head competition began on Sunday morning when the double elimination matches began. The bracket seeding was determined by Saturday’s qualification rankings. The matches were extremely close with many of them going into sudden death play where players restart the same course and keep playing until one person gets a single stroke advantage. At the close of play on Sunday afternoon newcomer Shawn Powers, of Alabama, was determined to be the event’s winner. Never losing a match, Shawn’s closest competition was in the semi-finals when he was matched against Ashton Christie. The sudden-death play went 7 holes until Shawn as able to take the lead. At the end of the match he was heard to say, “I stuck with my strategy and played the man, not the course.”

When asked about his impressions of this year’s event, Wes Harris, GLOBAL VR’s Tournaments Director commented, “Every year the competition gets better and every year we try to make the event more challenging and more fun for players. It was encouraging to see so many new faces added to this events line-up. From all accounts, this event was a huge success… on every level.”

2nd Place was claimed by Kevin Potter of South Africa and 3rd was taken by Ashton Christie of Texas. For more detailed tournament information please visit www.globalvr.com.
