Association for the Leisure and Entertainment Industry (IALEI)

Sjolander to Retire as IALEI Executive Director
Replacement Sought

Hillsboro, NH; July 8, 2005 – Carole Sjolander has announced her plan to retire as Executive Director of the International Association for the Leisure and Entertainment Industry (IALEI) effective December 31, 2005.  A task force has been appointed to find her replacement and facilitate the transition to new staff leadership.

Sjolander is the first Executive Director of IALEI, formed in 1993 to serve the interests of fun centers and all types of interactive entertainment facilities.  The Association grew out of the Fun Expo trade show, held annually in the fall in Las Vegas.  IALEI developed over the years into a full service non-profit trade association serving its industry.

Besides the trade show, IALEI sponsors an insurance program saving its members major dollars on insurance premiums as well as other member discount savings.  Especially important and growing for the Association are the educational programs, how-to manuals and regular publications.  IALEI also offer a help line to assist members with particular challenges as well as numerous networking opportunities.

The Transition Task Force is chaired by IALEI Past President Ken Vondriska and also includes IALEI Past President Gene Hinkle, IALEI President Laurien Henry, IALEI First Vice President Frank Seninsky, IALEI Second Vice President Larry Davis and IALEI Treasurer Court Huish.  Persons interested in the Executive Director position should forward a letter of interest and resume to Ken Vondriska at kvondriska@aol.com.

Prior to joining IALEI, Sjolander was assistant Executive Director for the International Association of Assembly Managers in Irving, TX; Director of Communications for the Wholesale Stationers’ Association in Chicago; and Editor at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), then located in suburban Chicago.

“I’ve had a great career.  It’s been wonderful spending so much of it in the entertainment and amusement industry.  So many wonderful people and so much fun!  IALEI has been an especially gratifying experience.  I have had a series of great, entrepreneurial Boards to work with, and to see the Association grow and prosper from a start up in 1994 to the thriving and respected organization it is today has been wonderful,” Sjolander said.

“The IALEI Leadership knows we have a challenge to replace Carole.  She’s always been there for us to serve and guide and she won’t be easy to replace.  But the Association is in great shape, resting on a very solid foundation, so we go forward with confidence knowing the next chapter can be as exciting as this first decade,” said IALEI President Laurien Henry.

Vondriska said, “The Task Force will be accepting applications until September 1.  We plan to have a new Executive Director in place by November 1.  We are open to moving the Association from its present location in New Hampshire.  The location of the offices will be determined with the new Executive Director.”

IALEI’s Director of Finance and Trade Shows, Ray Sjolander will also retire December 31.   Ray is married to Carole Sjolander.  They met when they both worked at IAAPA where he was Business Manager and Trade Show manager for eleven years during which time he was behind the growth of the IAAPA show from a hotel show to the large convention center show.

“Ray and Carole have become our friends and we will miss them, but wish them well in their retirement,” Vondriska said.

The Sjolanders plan to relocate from New Hampshire to Hot Springs, Arkansas, in the spring.  “Ray and I each have children in Texas and Kansas, so we look forward to being closer to them,” Carole Sjolander said.

IALEI is the premier membership organization representing the interests of owners and operators entertainment and leisure facilities.  IALEI offers products and services to assist its members in the successful management and operation of their facilities, including an industry insurance program through Sterling and Sterling Insurance that provides its members with substantial savings on insurance.  Representing more than 3,000 locations worldwide, IALEI provides quality education, publications, research and networking as well as discounts on products.  IALEI sponsors Fun Expo held in September at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.   For further information, call IALEI at 603/464-6498 or visit the Association’s website at http://www.ialei.com for a wealth of information on membership, the programs and benefits IALEI offers as well as industry news.
