PGA Veteran Wins 2006 Golden Tee LIVE Challenge

(Arlington Heights, IL) Fans of professional golf know Peter Jacobsen best for his seven PGA Tour victories and his U.S. Senior Open victory in 2004. He has represented Team USA twice in the Ryder Cup and recently won two events on the Champions Tour. There’s no doubt that his name is synonymous with professional golf, but those of us in the amusement industry know his image extends to millions of people beyond the professional links. Over the past 11 years, Jacobsen has become legendary to another market: the over 10 million strong army of Golden Tee players.

Since 1995, Jacobsen’s voice and likeness have been featured in the famed virtual golf game that can be found in nearly 100,000 bars and pubs around the world. Golden Tee players know him best for his witty commentary and classic trackball-controlled golf swing. The ability to play golf with Jacobsen usually ends at the barroom for most GT players, but a group of lucky college golfers recently got their chance to play Golden Tee against him and seek revenge for his countless quips.

For the second straight year, Golden Tee Golf sponsored Jacobsen’s Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational held on February 26th – 28th at Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club in Naples, Florida. The event is one of the premier collegiate golf tournaments in the country, featuring 12 top university golf squads in a 54-hole tournament.

Adding to the competitive experience, Incredible Technologies sponsored the second annual Golden Tee Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge during the event’s VIP banquet. With the help of Bob Schuster of Coin Drop Games in Naples, the collegians competed on a brand new Golden Tee LIVE machine. The winner of the contest received a chance to square off against Jacobsen in a nine-hole Golden Tee match.

Chad Wilcox of Wake Forest University defeated runner-up Tyler Obermueler of the University of Wisconsin for the chance to play against Jacobsen. “This is great,” said Wilcox about the event. “This is the first time I’ve ever played a pro!”

With the support of his coach and teammates, Wilcox went stroke-for-stroke against the PGA star with the media and an excited crowd watching. The match was played LIVE, placing Wilcox and Jacobsen in a real-time Golden Tee contest against other players from around the world. Jacobsen went on to defeat Wilcox by 4 strokes to claim his first Golden Tee Challenge title.

“I got beat up in the contest last year,” Jacobsen said about his debut in the GT Challenge. “I have a reputation to protect!” he joked.

The Golden Tee event at the Intercollegiate also marked the PGA veteran’s first exposure to Golden Tee LIVE, which features his newest audio and video commentary. “Larry Hodgson and the crew at Incredible Technologies have once again outdone themselves,” said Peter about Golden Tee LIVE. “Fans at Tour events always love yelling Golden Tee slogans at me. Who knows what they’re going to say now with Golden Tee LIVE!” he added.

LIVE marks the third collaboration between Jacobsen and the acclaimed video golf series.
