He was truly the face of coin-op. I was fortunate to know Joe Robbins for over forty years, having first met him after graduating from college and going to work for my father's distributorship, United, Inc., in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Joe, of course, was heading up Empire Distributing in Chicago at that time, along with his partner, Gil Kitt.Joe and my father were friendly competitors, and Empire always provided United with access to product lines that we did not carry factory direct. Joe charged us just a smidgen over his cost even though he knew that both our companies were selling to the same customers in Wisconsin. After my father's untimely death, Joe was particularly gracious to me, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. After I moved to California and eventually headed up a number of Japanese companies, Joe once told me that he considered me one of the brightest young executives in the business. Those words meant the world to me, especially coming from Joe. Joe Robbins' death closes a page in our industry's history. He was truly the face of coin-op. Rest in peace, my friend.
