Merit Assists South African Authorities in Piracy Crackdown

Fay praised the work of DM Kisch law firm in Johannesburg

Bensalem, PA – The Johannesburg Commercial Crime Unit raided the office of Austrojoy in Johannesburg on January 11, 2007 and seized infringing Merit Force software, announced Robert C. Fay, Merit’s Director of Government Relations.

“We have been investigating the illegal activities of Austrojoy for three months and have developed evidence of importing and distributing copies of Merit Force touch screen games,” stated Fay. The action taken was based on Austrojoy allegedly infringing Merit’s copyrights and trademarks. The evidence seized and the evidence previously obtained will be the basis for filing a criminal complaint with police services in Johannesburg.

“We have been conducting anti-piracy efforts in South Africa for seven months, and have identified several individuals who have imported, distributed or operated Merit copies. Some of these cases we have resolved and others are continuing. In addition, SARS, the South African Revenue Service, has previously seized copies from China at the port of Durban,” added Fay.

“Merit will continue its fight against copiers in South Africa and is fully committed to protecting its intellectual property rights worldwide,” Fay further stated.

Fay praised the work of DM Kisch law firm in Johannesburg, which coordinated the investigation and raids on behalf of Merit.
