NAMA - National Automatic Merchandising Association

ROUTE DRIVER RODEO COMPETITION

BIRDWELL TAKES 1ST PLACE IN NAMA
Hude, Johnson Also Show Winning Skills

Chicago, IL — Lee Birdwell from Treat America of Overland Park, Kansas, captured first-place and received $3,000 in the 2nd Route Driver Rodeo competition Oct. 29, at the National Automatic Merchandising Association's (NAMA), Fall Expo in Atlanta, GA, Larry Eils, NAMA Senior Director Technical Services announced today.

Twenty-seven drivers participated in the Rodeo which consisted of a 20-question written exam to test their knowledge of the rules of the road, a pre-trip vehicle inspection to determine what four items were not functioning on a truck, and a driving obstacle course, explained Eils. The five obstacle maneuvers were those a driver would experience daily: right turn on the money, diminishing cones, off-set alley, serpentine and backing into a loading dock, he added.

The score on the written exam was needed to break the tie between Birdwell and Nathan Hude from Canteen Services of Belmont, Michigan, who placed second and received $2,000. Both men scored 625 points out of 655 in the pre-trip vehicle inspection and driving obstacle course. Third place winner with a score of 620 was Steven Johnson of Canteen Services of Owensboro, Kentucky.

In addition to the cash prizes, each winner received a glass trophy, and their sponsoring companies received vendible product prizes equal to the amount won by their drivers. Product sponsors were Buddy's Kitchen; Poore Brothers; Kar Nut Products; ConAgra Foods, Vend & OCS; Kraft Vending & OCS; and Nestle's Beverages.

NAMA's first Route Driver Rodeo was held in 2002 in Atlanta, and the first-place winner at that event was Jon Bachert from Treat American. The Route Driver Rodeo's objective is to promote safety in companies and on highways; recognize and reward driver excellence; improve driving performance; develop a sense of pride among employees; and provide the opportunity to demonstrate skills, knowledge of the vehicle and awareness of safety regulations, said Eils.

“A special thanks goes to General Motors/Isuzu for funding the rodeo for the second time, and to the members of the Georgia Automatic Merchandising Council who supplied the manpower and complimentary refreshments throughout the rodeo,” said Eils.

NAMA is the national trade association of the food and refreshment vending, coffee service and foodservice management industries including on-site, commissary, catering, & mobile. Its membership is comprised of service companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers of products and services to operating service companies. The basic mission of the association, to collectively advance and promote the automatic merchandising and coffee service industries, still guides NAMA today as it did in 1936, the year of the organization's founding.
