NAMA National Automatic Merchandising Association

FORMER IFIC PRESIDENT SYLVIA ROWE NAMED NAMA BOARD MEMBER

Fills Newly Added Board-Mandated Seat for Outside-the Industry-Director

CHICAGO, IL – Recently retired President and CEO of the International Food and Information Council (IFIC) and Foundation Sylvia Rowe has been named to the Board of Directors of the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA) effective March 1, NAMA President and CEO Richard M. Geerdes, NCE announced today. Rowe fills the first-ever outside-the-industry seat which was added by the Board of Directors in a unanimously approved motion designed to broaden its perspective on issues.

In making the announcement Geerdes said, “Sylvia is a world figure on food safety and nutrition issues relevant to our industry. Her exceptional background will help us develop new approaches on a broad range of issues that will help us solve problems and push our industry forward. We couldn’t be more delighted that she has agreed to work with us.” Rowe first worked with NAMA in Spring 2004 when she spoke at the Spring Expo about the threat which rising childhood obesity rates posed to the vending industry.

Rowe is one of the nation’s most highly visible experts on a wide range of food-based issues. As President and CEO of IFIC, Rowe built the non-profit organization into one of the most highly regarded and trusted sources for science-based information on food safety and nutrition issues for health professionals, journalists, government officials, educators and consumers. Since she joined the organization, she has also successfully established it as a leader in consumer research and consumer-based communications in nutrition, food safety, and health. Rowe’s leadership has resulted in national public-private partnerships and coalitions between IFIC and preeminent government agencies and health organizations committed to developing science-based consumer communications on healthful lifestyles.

According to John Peterson, Managing Partner for Howe & Hutton, Ltd., who advises NAMA on legal issues, the addition of Rowe to the Board demonstrates responsible governance. Said Peterson, “As associations seek to ensure that they practice within the spirit of improved governance mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation for businesses, it is clearly a significant step in the right direction to include the additional perspective of an external director on the board.”

Rowe's expertise in media and issues management is not surprising given her extensive background working as a producer and on-air host of several television and radio talk shows covering social, political, economic and consumer issues. She also previously held positions in public relations, marketing, and membership development for the American Tort Reform Association, the American Association of University Women, and The Sugar Association.

Rowe is Chair of the Communications Committee of the American Heart Association’s Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism and has served on Boards or Advisory Committees of the American Society of Association Executives Foundation, Food Update Foundation, Tufts University School of Nutrition Science and Policy Graduate Program in Nutrition Communication, University of Rochester Medical Center Nutrition Academic Award Program, Food and Drug Law Institute, Society for Nutrition Education Foundation, and Maryland Title IX Commission. She is also a member of the International Women’s Leadership Forum, the National Press Club, American Newswomen’s Club, the American Society of Association Executives and Institute of Food Technologists.

She is also serving as an Adjunct Professor at both the University of Massachusetts - Amherst and Tufts University, sharing her experience in food science, consumer research, governmental policy and communications with students. Rowe received a Bachelor's Degree from Wellesley College and was awarded a Masters Degree from Harvard University, both with honors.

Concluded Geerdes, “Sylvia has a remarkable background that will be of tremendous value to our organization as we work to address the many complicated issues our industry is facing. She will bring a unique perspective that is sure to help us as we continue to work to strengthen both our association and the future of our industry.”

NAMA is the national trade association of the food and refreshment vending, coffee services and foodservice management industries including on-site, commissary, catering, & mobile. Its membership is comprised of service companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers of products and services to operating service companies. The basic mission of the association, to collectively advance and promote the automatic merchandising and OCS industries, still guides NAMA today as it did in 1936, the year of the organization’s founding.
