NAMA National Automatic Merchandising Association

BACK TO SCHOOL:

Stock Up on Balanced for Life Materials To Help Educate Students About a Balanced Diet & Exercise

Chicago, IL – Members of the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA) with school accounts should be sure to visit the association’s Balanced for Life website (www.balancedforlife.net) to make sure they have enough campaign materials for schools this fall, NAMA President and CEO Richard M. Geerdes, NCE said today. The organization has created everything from static clings and posters to brochures and a new game designed to communicate the importance of a balanced diet and being physically active. The materials are just some of the elements of the organization’s health and fitness initiative which was created to show that the industry is working to do its part to address skyrocketing obesity rates.

“We need to educate our students about the importance of a balanced diet and the wide array of ‘better for you’ grab-and-go choices from the vending machine. Students need to understand too how important it is for them to be physically active. These are great materials our operators can use that communicate those messages and demonstrate that they are working to be part of the solution,” he added.

A new tool for this school session is a Trivia Treasure Hunt Game designed to teach kids about nutrition and exercise. NAMA operators can download all the materials they need under the Operator Tool Box link at www.balancedforlife.net and offer it to their school accounts. The game features 12 posters with each one including a health or fitness-related question that students answer by entering the information on the Balanced for Life website. By placing the posters over a wide area of the school’s grounds, operators encourage the students to be physically active while they are playing the game. The first 10 students in a particular school to answer all the questions correctly win a prize.

Along with the new Trivia Treasure Hunt Game, there are items operators can purchase and distribute to schools – Snack Smart and Be a Smart Snacker brochures; a special Snack Smart poster; A.J the Athlete, Healthy Hazel and Sean the Smart Guy static clings, and Be a Smart Snacker stickers. A special booklet, Make a Difference: Some Ideas for Your School’s Vending Program, authored by campaign dietitian Lori Valencic, MEd, RD, LD, and NAMA’s Sr. Director of Technical Services Larry Eils is available as well.

“It’s not too late to stock up on these materials. Combating childhood obesity begins with education. Visit www.balancedforlife.net to order your supplies, and be ready to help educate our nation’s youth,” Geerdes concluded.

NAMA is the national trade association of the food and refreshment vending, coffee service and foodservice management industries including on-site, commissary, catering, & mobile. Its membership is comprised of service companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers of products and services to operating service companies. The basic mission of the association, to collectively advance and promote the automatic merchandising and coffee service industries, still guides NAMA today as it did in 1936, the year of the organization’s founding.
