Icons of the Century
SAN JOSE, CA ~ October 20, 2005, Namco America Inc. is thrilled
Who would you choose as the entertainment icon of the century? Elvis? Oprah? Humphrey Bogart? In celebration of its one hundredth anniversary, Variety released its first-ever list of the top one hundred entertainment icons of the past century from film, TV, music, theater and radio.
What did the Variety staff have to say about this famous character? “Well before Lara croft began kicking butt, this little yellow guy from Japan ushered in the videogame era, taking the nation by storm in 1981. Pong hit the market first, but Pac-Man - with a permanent grin and boundless appetite - game games a personality, appealing to arcade-addicted men and women of all ages.”
“In addition to numerous sequels, the original Pac-Man spawned an ABC cartoon, a hit song and even a breakfast cereal. More important, with more than 10 billion quarters spent on games, Pac-man made it clear that there was a huge audience for interactive entertainment just waiting to be served.”
Frank Cosentino, Namco's VP of Sales and Marketing, was thrilled by this announcement. “Pac-Man is an amazing character. To be one of only 2 animated characters to make this list, the other one being Mickey Mouse, is quite an honor.”
In honor of Pac-man's 25 anniversary, Namco America has released a 25th Anniversary edition arcade cabinet with Pac-man, Ms. Pac-man and Galaga. It is available in coin-op and a non-coin home rec-room version. You can find it at retailers nationwide.
