NATIONAL BULK VENDORS ASSOCIATION - NBVA

NATIONAL BULK VENDORS ASSOCIATION WRAPS UP ITS 2005 ANNUAL CONVENTION WITH HIGHER SALES THAN IN YEARS PRIOR

CHICAGO - Exhibitors at the 2005 National Bulk Vendors Association (NBVA) Convention, held this past week in Jacksonville, Fla., reported a successful show, with increased sales revenues up over years prior, according to association executives. The sales increase at the show was a positive indication to exhibitors and NBVA executives alike that the industry as a whole is moving forward again, gearing up for a profitable 2005 and 2006.

“The attendees at this year's show were excited about the new product selections being offered, and were in full swing to capitalize on the traditionally-profitable summer months when kids and teens are out of school, and have more spending money to use for purchasing products,” said Peter Becker, What's Up! LLC president and industry supplier, of the more than 530 show attendees who tallied up the show's profitable sales.

New Announcements Provide NBVA Members with New Benefits:

Unveiled to wide acclaim at the show, the NBVA announced a major new communication initiative for members: a new association newsletter.

The newsletter is scheduled to be published 4-6 times per year, and was designed to provide information on a wide range of issues, giving readers a comprehensive view of the bulk-vending industry. In addition to current news, each issue will include such features as:

  • a message from the president on any new topics from the NBVA
  • a message from the NBVA counsel, keeping readers up-to-date on all industry legislative issues
  • a “Future of Bulk Vending” section, written by a different featured guest on up-and-coming topics and information
  • industry news and events
  • a “People in the Business” profile section to highlight individuals who have made a profound impact on the industry

And as in prior years, a new slate of officers was elected to serve as leadership for the NBVA. The new President is Daniel L. Case of Tejas Distributors in Round Rock, Texas. The other new officers are Vice President Peter Becker of What's Up, LLC in Appleton, Wisconsin; Secretary Randy Chilton of Sugarloaf—Folz Vending in Louisville, Colorado; and Treasurer Steve Siegel of Great American Vending Machine Company in Hauppauge, New York.

Convention Seminars Gave Attendees Powerful Business Tools:

A film, four seminars and a workshop provided show attendees with current industry information on Friday, April 22, and sessions were highly attended, several by more than 100 association members.

Created by Steve Siegel, Seminar Chairman for the Convention, a film presentation on suppliers and operators resulted in standing-room-only attendance. Places of business explored by the movie were Atlas Vending of Boulder, Colorado; Vendomatic of Frederick, Maryland and Sugarloaf-Folz Vending in Oceanside, New York.

Other morning seminars included an Expert Panel of Suppliers that featured Phil Brilliant of A&A Global Industries in Cockeysville, Maryland; Marlene Campbell of Toy `n Joy in Kimberly, Wisconsin; Dax Logue of Brand Imports in Scottsdale, Arizona; Tom Paszkiewicz of Cardinal Industries in Baltimore, Maryland; and Peter Becker of What's Up, LLC in Appleton, Wisconsin. The other morning session included a presentation long demanded by NBVA members - a Program for Alternative Health Insurance Coverage for association members presented by Bill Fjernan and Geri Ann Cangelosi of Aegis Administrative Services in Chicago, Illinois.

The afternoon seminars included a discussion of Family Business Planning and Succession, featuring David Dilbert of Smiles Candy Corp in New Hyde Park, New York and association counsel Mitchell Roth from the Much Shelist law firm in Chicago, Illinois. The final program was another new initiative to explain How to Effectively Conduct a Media Interview, presented by Liz Kohler, of Liz Kohler Consulting in Milwaukee, Wis., a media training consultant hired by the association to handle public media issues and other projects.

“The feedback from attendees on seminars and seminar topics at this year's show has been very positive,” said Steve Siegel, president of The Great American Vending Machine Company, and Seminar Chairman for the Convention. “We wanted to create the kind of educational topics our attendees would find most valuable in the years to come, and based on the response of our attendees, that was what they experienced.”

Business Opportunities Abounded for Attendees:

For the second year in a row, a participant in the golf tournament achieved a hole in one on a par 3 hole and won $20,000. This year's hole-in-one winner was Al Stevens, of C&G Products. The golf event, won by a team comprised of Mike O'Conner from Metro Coin, Chris Miller from Pete Miller Vending, and Kevin Timper, from What's Up?, LLC, was sponsored by Concord Confections, a newly acquired division of Tootsie Roll Industries. And one of the key highlights of the convention was entertainment provided by a new band comprised solely of NBVA members, dubbed the Nightrockers. Their presentation Saturday night captivated the audience and repeatedly brought the house to its feet, with demands for encores. The talented group included emcee and crooner Jim Hinton from Oak Manufacturing in Vernon, California; on keyboards Adam Ippolito of New York Sticker Exchange in Brooklyn, New York; lead guitar and singer Steven Schechner from Capital Vending in Florence, Alabama; bass guitar by Peter Becker from What's Up, LLC in Appleton, Wisconsin; on conga drum Richard Bolen of Northwestern Corporation in Morris, Illinois; and Matt Miller on percussion and vocals from Beaver Machine Corp in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada.
