STERN PINBALL, INC.

Business Week Online - Portrait of a Pinball Wizard

Melrose Park, Illinois –Stern Pinball, Inc. is being prominently featured on the Business Week Online website (Click here to read the article.) in an article called “Portrait of a Pinball Wizard.”  Written by Seth Porges, the article discusses Stern’s place as the sole pinball machine company, as well as Gary Stern’s genuine affection for the pinball business.  The article not only reinforces Stern Pinball’s firm commitment to pinball, but also demonstrates that Stern works hard to build the best product possible for their distributors, operators, and consumers.

In “Portrait of a Pinball Wizard,” Gary Stern discusses the ways in which the company is expanding into new pinball markets.  Stern Pinball now offers Spanish speech in games that go to Hispanic communities in the U.S., as well as selling games to new overseas markets like Russia, China, and the Middle East.  In addition, roughly 20% of Stern games are now going to the home, a fact that bodes well for Stern distributors, and operators who sell games that have been retired from their routes.

The Business Week Online article also discusses how Stern works with their licensors on their titles.  For example, in developing THE SOPRANOS®, Stern worked closely with HBO, as well as the actors on the show, to create a pinball machine that best represents the show and is fun to play for both beginners and pinball wizards.

Finally, “Portrait of a Pinball Wizard” offers a history of the pinball business, including Roger Sharpe’s account of pinball’s transformation from a banned gambling machine to a game of skill with the invention of the flipper.  It also discusses Gary Stern’s history, from working as a stock boy at Williams to working with his father at Stern Electronics to starting Data East Pinball, which later turned into Sega Pinball and then Stern Pinball.

The article concludes with Gary Stern’s declaration that the people of Stern Pinball are committed to keeping pinball alive.
