Summer Hits and Oktoberfest
Being Added for 2007 “Hot New Releases” Delivers Debut Album
by Sizzling Young British Singer
LAKE ZURICH, Ill., — Digital jukebox leader TouchTunes Music Corporation is adding two timely new song compilations to its selection of downloadable, virtual ‘albums’ with interactive touch-screen graphics that provide operators and their patrons convenient access to music for holidays and special events, as well as for themed parties at individual jukebox locations.
New for 2007 are the pre-programmed playlists “Summer’s Smash Hits,” to coincide with the June 21 start of summer, and “Oktoberfest,” for the traditional German celebration whose dates this year are Sept. 11 to October 7.
Among songs to appear on the Summer Hits playlist are Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape,” Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” and British pop newcomer Lily Allen’s “Smile.”
Oktoberfest offerings include, among others, bar-friendly titles such as the Happy Schnapps Combo’s “Beer and a Bump,” Lawrence Welk’s “Bubbles in the Wine,” and Frank Yankovic’s “In Heaven There Is No Beer.”
TouchTunes offers operators more than 30 special-event and holiday playlists for 2007, beginning with Grammy Award-winning songs (announced February 11), followed by playlists for Valentine’s Day (February 14) and Mardi Gras (February 20).
In addition to the new Summer and Oktoberfest playlists, the roster includes music for St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), Cinco de Mayo (May 5), Independence Day (July 4), Halloween (October 31), the Country Music Association (CMA) Country Music Awards (date to be announced), and Christmas (December 25).
Using TouchTunes secure online Operator Dashboard Web site, accessible from any Internet computer, operators can download complete playlists (or selected songs) to any of their TouchTunes jukeboxes. Some of these come with “album cover” graphics that appear on the jukebox screen to alert users to the special song clusters.
Since fall, TouchTunes has been offering Billboard-branded playlists based on he most popular Billboard charts — a TouchTunes digital jukebox exclusive.
“While we constantly offer new tools to help operators manage their music, we never force feed or ‘push content’ to their jukeboxes,” says Dan McAllister, TouchTunes’ senior vice president for sales and marketing. “TouchTunes has always respected the independence, business judgment, and individual needs of its operators and their locations. It’s the operator’s choice whether or not to download and use any playlist or other feature, because that’s who owns the jukebox.”
To download the song sets, operators log on to the Operator Dashboard via a link on TouchTunes’ home page (www.touchtunes.com). On the Dashboard’s main screen, they scroll down and click on the “Hot Lists” link in the music section. This opens a page of drop-down menus of playlists under headings such as “Themes” and “Special Events.” Selecting a playlist displays its song contents.
Songs are downloaded via high-speed broadband or dial-up, typically overnight, to the jukebox’s music-storage system where they — and some 160,000 other songs — reside and remain available for immediate play, even in the event of a broadband or telecommunications outage at the location.
“Hot New Releases” Hops on Debut CD by Lily Allen
TouchTunes has been reintroducing operators to its “Hot New Releases” lists on the Operator Dashboard. Organized by music genre – pop, country, etc. —“Hot New Releases” are updated as soon as new music is added to TouchTunes’ central music library.
“Nobody in the digital jukebox industry gets newly released music faster than TouchTunes,” says Laurie Hughes, TouchTunes’ vice president for business affairs, the company’s main liaison with record labels and music publishers.
By regularly consulting the “Hot New Releases,” operators can identify and download the newest music before they get their semi-monthly, updated master music catalog, the company notes.
In January, TouchTunes made available the eagerly awaited, just-released debut album by 21-year-old British pop sensation Lily Allen, in conjunction with the singer’s musical guest appearance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and the start of her first U.S. tour. Operators had a choice of downloading her entire album, Alright, Still, or any of the individual tracks.
TouchTunes Music Corporation introduced the world’s first digital downloading, coin-operated commercial jukebox in 1998. Today, TouchTunes’ online network of some 23,000 pay-per-play Internet jukeboxes in bars, restaurants, and other establishments throughout North America is the industry’s largest, representing a market share of more than 60 percent.
A privately held U.S. corporation, TouchTunes’ principal offices are in Montreal, Canada, and Lake Zurich, Ill., a Chicago suburb. The company is backed by VantagePoint Venture Partners, one of the largest venture capital firms in the world with offices in Silicon Valley, New York, and Montreal. VantagePoint has over $4 billion in capital under management, including a substantial portfolio of consumer-oriented digital-media companies that complement TouchTunes’ growing leadership in out-of-home, interactive entertainment.
