TOUCHTUNES OPERATOR SCOTT BRIGHT LIGHTS UP HIS LOCATIONS WITH VISITS BY A ROCK LEGEND
|
Mark Farner, formerly of Grand Funk Railroad, Wows Patrons at Personal Appearances at Michigan Night Spots
Current solo album ‘For The People’ Is Available for Play on TouchTunes’ 25,000 Digital Jukeboxes
“What a concept! Rock on, TouchTunes” – Mark Farner
FLINT, Mich., May 11, 2007 — Michigan jukebox operator Scott Bright knows how to shine at his locations.
Working with representatives of rock legend Mark Farner, former lead singer of Grand Funk Railroad, the Flint-based TouchTunes digital jukebox operator set up personal appearances for Farner at five of his bar locations in Flint and Traverse City in late April.
Farner is the songwriter, guitarist and the unmistakable voice that powered Grand Funk Railroad to 12 platinum and 15 gold albums. He’s a hometown hero in his native Flint.
“This generated tremendous excitement,” Bright said. “My bar owners were ecstatic.”
New solo CD
Farner was eager to spread the word about his newest solo CD album, For The People, to his legions of local fans. With its powerhouse tracks, For The People harkens back to the definitive style familiar to tens of millions of fans worldwide: well-written songs, perfectly placed power chords, catchy melodic lines, blistering guitar solos, and soulful vocals.
Bright and his staff at All American Amusement and Vending created flyers and posted them at the bars to promote Farner’s appearances. Farner’s reps blanketed the area, distributing their own promotional materials.
Meanwhile, TouchTunes’ Laurie Hughes, Nashville-based vice president for business affairs, expedited the music licensing process to get Farner’s For the People CD cleared for digital jukebox use. In Montreal, Sylvie St. Hilaire and her music operations staff added the album art and all the CD tracks to TouchTunes’ massive, online digital media library, making it available for download to All American’s locations in time for Farner’s appearances — and to all 25,000 TouchTunes digital jukeboxes in North America.
“Wow! What a concept!” Farner wrote in a recent e-mail to TouchTunes. “Thanks to TouchTunes’ cutting edge technology, fans can play my music anywhere TouchTunes [jukeboxes] are found. That’s what I’m talkin’ about. Rock on, TouchTunes!”
Farner has extended an open invitation to TouchTunes employees to attend his summer 2007 concerts as his personal guests.
Bright, one of the company’s largest Michigan operators, says, “I really feel like we’re partners with TouchTunes. Their service is outstanding and extremely responsive.”
“Completely charming”
At one bar, Bright recalls, a classic-rock band was booked on the night of Farner’s appearance. When the musicians realized that one of their ultimate rock-and-roll idols was in the bar, “They went freakin’ ballistic,” Bright says. “For a cover band, this was a dream come true. They had him autograph everything they could get their hands on.”
Farner spent 90 minutes at each bar, freely giving autographs, posing for pictures, and chatting with the throngs of well-wishers. At one bar, Bright says, patrons were lined up from the autograph table at the back of the room to the front door and outside on the sidewalk.
“He absolutely, truly loves people,” Bright says. “He would have stayed at every location all night if we hadn’t hurried him along to the next place.”
(The All Media Guide’s biography of Farner echoes Bright’s impression of the artist: “The man who has stood on-stage in front of millions is completely charming when you stand in his presence, not the imposing larger than life image one might expect from the guy who fronted a group which, next to the Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Aerosmith, and the Doors, is one of American’s most important and influential popular bands.”)
Bright says, “It was really fun as we went around to the locations for the meet-and-greets. Everybody had a personal story to tell about Farner and his former band.”
One of America’s first blues-rock power trios, Grand Funk Railroad recorded 17 albums with total sales of more than 30 million records. The band’s hit singles include “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” “The Loco-Motion,” and the timeless top-40 radio anthem, “We’re An American Band.”
